Dorm Room Pizza
By David & Martha Cox 03/16/2010This recipe is so simple that I almost put it in our 10 Minutes or Less series. Dorm Room Pizza is my name for a recipe that actually goes by many names.
The concept is pretty simple: You take some bread, smear spaghetti sauce on it, layer on a little pizza topping, and cook it (like a pizza). You can make it with any type of cheese, any seasonings, any sliced bread, and any sauce–even leftover sauce–you have lying around. It’s easy enough you can even cook it if you’re living in the dorm at college (hence the name).
Dorm Room Pizza is my favorite way to dispose of leftover Italian ingredients. Whether it’s leftover sauce, the last few remaining strands of mozzarella cheese, or whatever, it’s one of those quick meals or snacks you can use to clean out the fridge a little. Here’s how it goes.
Ingredients:
- Sliced bread
- Spaghetti Sauce
- Shredded cheese (Mozzarella is best, but any cheese will do)
- Pepperoni
- Sliced or chopped onion, bell pepper, or other veggie topping (optional)
- Italian seasonings like Marjoram, Basil, Oregano, and Garlic (optional)
The Process:
- If you want crunchier pizza, toast the slices of bread before you begin.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- On a cookie sheet, spread out your slices of bread/toast.
- Smear spaghetti sauce on to each one. Use as much or as little sauce as you like–it’s entirely up to you.
- Sprinkle any seasonings you want to use. This will give your meal a more “Italian” taste.
- Layer on cheese, pepperoni, and any veggies you like. I like to put 2-3 slices of pepperoni on each piece of bread, and lay a little onion or green bell pepper around them.
- Place cookie sheet in the oven for about 10 minutes.
- Pull the cookie sheet out, let the Dorm Room Pizza cool for a minute, then enjoy!
- Repeat the process, if you want some more.
This recipe is so simple that I almost put it in our 10 Minutes or Less series. The truth is, though, it probably takes closer to 15-20 minutes to make this meal.
Whether you just want a couple of slices to munch on, or you’re looking for a cheap way to make a quick pizza at home, this is about as easy as it gets.
A word of warning: Cooking this very often could cost you a lot of money in bread. I recommend reserving Dorm Room Pizza either for those loaves that are on the verge of molding or for the less-desirable heels of a loaf. That way you’re less likely to waste a lot of sandwich bread indulging in pizza.
